Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court of India is at the top of the hierarchy of courts in India. Constituted under Articles 124-147 the Supreme Court is the guardian of the constitution and its core values. It is often said that the constitution of India is a living document as the decisions of the Supreme Court has the effect of breathing life into the words as laid down in the constitution.
High Courts of Respective States
The High Courts of the Respective States of Indian Territory are constituted under Articles 214-231 of the Constitution of India. In terms of inherent powers, they are on the same footing as the Supreme Court of India, to enforce the rule of law.
District/Sessions Courts of the Respective States
District Courts are constituted by way of statutory enactments in the Indian Territory at the District level in all states for the enforcement of law. They are subordinate to the High Courts as the High Courts administrator as well as supervise the functioning of these courts.
District/Sessions Courts in Delhi
These are the principal trial courts in Delhi that try both civil and criminal matters at the district level. The head is the District & Sessions Judge, whose court is located in the Tis Hazari Courts Complex.
Bar Council of India
Established under Section 4 of the Advocates Act, 1961, it is the apex statutory body regulating the legal profession and legal education in India. It prescribes standards of professional conduct and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction over lawyers.
Bar Council of Delhi
Constituted under the Advocates Act, 1961, BCD is a statutory body regulating the advocates in Delhi. It enrolls advocates, enforces professional ethics, provides welfare, and represents them before the BCI.
National Capital Territory
National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT)
The National Capital Territory of Delhi or popularly known as Delhi is a territory of the Union of India administered directly by the appointee of the Union.
By the 69th Constitutional Amendment in 1991, Delhi has been given special status. It has a legislative Assembly elected directly by the People and a council of ministers. However, the legislative assembly of NCT cannot legislate in the matters of land, public order and Police which are the exclusive domain of the Union.
Laws enacted by the Parliament and the Delhi Legislative Assembly are both applicable to this Territory.
National Capital Region
National Capital Region
It is important to note the difference between National Capital Territory and National Capital Region (NCR).
National Capital Region is a broader term that includes not only the territory of Delhi but also the neighboring areas and satellite towns that are economically and socially integrated with Delhi. The National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) was established to plan and develop the infrastructure and balanced growth of the entire NCR.
